Car Insurance

Every car that trundles around the roads of Britain must have insurance; this has been a legal requirement since 1930 but recent changes to the law mean that it is now illegal to keep an uninsured car, even if it isn`t being driven.

The only exception to the law are cars which have officially been declared as off the road - SORN - with the driving licensing body, DVLA.

This means that an increasing number of individuals are now having to find insurance for their vehicles to prevent them being taken away and crushed.

For those new to car insurance, the jargon involved can seem baffling and make it difficult to decide what is the best policy.

When taking out insurance, the first thing to decide is the type of cover to have on your policy. There are three main types: third party, third party fire and theft and fully comprehensive.

Third party cover is the legal minimum and ensures that any damage to the other car and passengers will be paid for, including medical costs. It does not cover any losses to you or your car or any damage caused due to theft or arson.

Third party fire and theft is the next step up the insurance ladder and covers all aspects that a basic third party policy does, with the addition of personal cover if your own vehicle is either stolen or set on fire.

The best type of cover - and the most expensive - is fully comprehensive. This type of cover ensures that both drivers are not left out of pocket, regardless of who is to blame for the accident, as damages to both vehicles and passengers are covered. Fire and theft costs are automatically included in the package.

Just like most other types of cover, car insurance carries an excess which is the sum of money that the insured person must pay from the total value of the claim. The higher the excess, the cheaper the premium, generally speaking. Young or inexperienced drivers may be forced to accept an inflated excess for their first three years of driving.

Insurance is not like shopping for a pair of shoes where you buy the first pair you like. Insurance premiums vary significantly across the market and providers frequently offer new customer deals and discounts in an attempt to win business.

It is possible to go to a broker who will search the market for a competitive quote to suit your circumstances, you can ring round insurers yourself directly or you can research online. Many people who opt to search online use comparison websites which can be a useful tool but not all insurers are included in their database so it is a good idea to widen your search to firms outside the website.

Once you have a quote it is possible to either complete the full application online or telephone to get the policy accepted. For straightforward cases it can be a good idea to proceed online as some insurers offer discounts for internet applications. However, this is only a good idea if you are certain you have fully understand what the policy covers and do not need to ask any questions before purchasing.

Car insurance is one of the biggest expenses that a motorist faces but the good news is for anyone who is a bit short of money saving money is possible with a bit of research and patience.
